August Birchbox – Soak it Up! Review

I signed up with Birchbox in May and I have to say, I’m really loving it. It’s a nice little pick-me-up to see the cute pink box pop up in my mailbox and it makes my heart get all aflutter. I immediately drop what I’m doing and I rip that box open like it’s Christmas. I get excited about the little things (small victories, people!).

For August, Birchbox’s theme is summer-care. it has been SO sunny and the temperature’s have been crazy hot here (in SoCal). I’m trying to hold on to summer for as long as I can but it’s so hot that I just want to hang out in a walk-in ice cream freezer all day or go to Antartica and chill with the penguins. Which is better? You decide.

Here’s what I got: and here’s how it measured up:

  • IPKN Flash Cream Radiant Primer –
    ipknus.com
    ipknus.com

Natural glow and healthy complexion primer with SPF 15. First thing I thought when I put this is on was, “Man, that smells so good!” cause it really does. It smells like a really good smelling shampoo (helpful description, right?) But the second thing I thought was,”Whoa, it looks like I dunked my face in body shimmer.” But after giving it a minute to set it wasn’t that bad. It almost looks like Benefit’s High Beam highlighter but in moisturizer form. My face looked had a pearly pink tint to it. I applied my foundation over top and it pretty much covered the luminosity right up. I mean, I noticed I looked a little more dewy, but it was so minimal I don’t think anyone else but myself would’ve been able to tell. Since I already have oily skin, I tend to be averse to luminous products. I think this primer would be great for someone with normal-to-dry-skin.

  • Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk –

This stuff is amazing. TRUST. It doesn’t have a strong scent, leaves the roots looking and feeling voluminous and doesn’t leave a white residue on my brunette hair. It seriously absorbs all the oils! With my old dry shampoos I would spray it on my hair then leave it there for a few minutes and flip my head upside and brush my hair upside down so the oils would transfer to the ends of my hair and then I would have to pat-pat my head to get the white residue out. With this dry shampoo, I don’t have to do any of that and I love how it’s tinted and doesn’t make my hair feel sticky! I am definitely going to purchase a full size.

  • St. Tropez Gradual In Shower Tanning Lotion –

I cannot truly give a review on this only because I do not plan on using it. I am naturally dark/tan all year (thanks, Peruvian genes!) My skin color is literally brown. However, it claims to give a natural looking streak free golden glow. First you shower, then apply in circular motions all over your body, wait 3 minutes, and rinse off with warm water. It says as soon as you dry off you will notice a gradual tan starting to develop!

  • Scalisi Skincare Anti-Aging Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30
    www.birchbox.com
    http://www.birchbox.com

It says it will repair skin, prevent future sun damage, and improve texture over time. My first thought was, “it smells like sunscreen, feels like sunscreen, and leaves me looking greasy like sunscreen. I do think it made my skin feel soft but only cause I felt so greasy; and I do think it will prevent future sun damage, it just didn’t make my skin feel moisturized. I know sunscreen should be put on everyday even if it’s not sunny, I just don’t think this is the moisturizer/sunscreen combo for me.

  • theBalm cosmetics Balm Desert Bronzer/Blush –

First thing, theBalm always has such cute packaging. Second, when I first saw this color I was like, oh great it has some shimmer. But once you put it on you can’t even really see it. Balm Desert is a warm/rich terra cotta (almost) reddish bronzer. It blends well and has a silky feel on the face. I do like this as a bronzer to give me that summer glow, but I don’t think I would contour with it or put it all over my face since it has such a reddish color to it. I actually think this color would be beautiful as an eyeshadow and I might actually use it that way. As a blush, it’s a little too deep for me, but so far I’m liking it as a bronzer and am excited to use it as an eyeshadow.

Does anyone else have Birchbox subscriptions? What other mostly beauty subscriptions are out there that I should try?

Thanks for reading!
